About Craft Producers 

Craft beverage producers are independently owned small and medium sized enterprises –  growers, manufacturers and leaders in tourism in their communities.

They are the new entrepreneurs making wines, beers, spirits and ciders. They are craftsman, who have the ability to create new products with incredible skill and taste. Then, there is their desire to do right by the planet – to promote small farms, revive communities and build local economies.

We believe that craft producers are small businesses, independent operators and support their local economies. 

Small businesses…

• have between 5 and 100 employees
• produce smaller designated amount of product, which is less than “commercial”  producers

Independent businesses are….

• privately owned companies
  (ex. single owner or partnership, employee owned)
• not controlled by anyone outside of the organization

About Western Canada

Western Canada, also referred to as the Western provinces and more commonly known as the West, is a region of Canada that includes the four provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.  British Columbia is culturally, economically, geographically, and politically distinct from the other parts of Western Canada and is often referred to as the “west coast” while Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba sometimes form a subset together commonly known as “The Prairies”.

The total population of Western Canada is nearly 12 million, including approximately 5 million in British Columbia, 4 million in Alberta, 1.1 million in Saskatchewan, and 1.28 million in Manitoba. This represents 31.5% of Canada’s population.

Western Canada’s four provinces span more than 2.7 million square kilometers. The West is a major pillar of the Canadian economy. It accounts for close to 40 per cent of Canada’s economy. The West is rich in natural resources, with world-leading reserves of oil, potash, and uranium. Western Canada has over 107,000 farming operations that cover more than 135 million acres, representing 85 percent of Canadian farmland.

We recognize that there are 20 key craft beverage areas in Western Canada. Within these regions there are ten census metropolitan areas, including four in British Columbia, three in Alberta, two in Saskatchewan, and one in Manitoba.
